How to choose a phone or laptop without relying on hype

Begin with your workload
Write down three essential tasks before comparing devices. Examples include taking photos, joining video calls, coding, using design software, studying, travelling or running spreadsheets. Prioritize devices that perform well at those tasks rather than comparing specifications you may never use.
Assess the screen and ergonomics
Check screen size, resolution, brightness and viewing comfort. Laptop weight and keyboard feel matter if you work for hours each day. A phone with a large display may be attractive for video but difficult to operate with one hand. Consider how the device will fit into your daily routine.
Memory, storage and expandability
Check the actual RAM and storage configuration sold by the retailer. A product family may include several configurations with very different prices. On laptops, determine whether memory or storage can be upgraded after purchase. On phones, check whether a storage card is supported or cloud backup would be needed.
Software support is a long-term cost
Security updates, operating system support and repair availability affect useful lifespan. Check the manufacturer’s published support terms for the exact model and region. A discounted device with limited update support may be a poorer long-term choice than a newer mid-range option.
Battery claims are rarely directly comparable
Measured runtime changes with screen brightness, network conditions and application workload. For laptops, read reviews using tasks similar to yours; for phones, compare results in comparable usage conditions. Check charger compatibility and whether a charger is included in the package.
Check the seller and final terms
Confirm the SKU, keyboard language or regional variant, warranty type, return procedure, shipping eligibility and import taxes. Avoid treating an affiliate listing or shopping guide as proof of inventory or a guaranteed price. Verify every material purchase term at the retailer before paying.
